The Peculiar
review 1: I liked the first novel a lot, but this one, while rich in world-building, had little else to it - flimsy plot, paper-thin characterization, haphazard momentum. A shame, because Bachmann is such an imaginative writer, and one who's very effective at immediately drawing the reader in - it's his inability to sustain my interest (due to aforementioned flaws) that eventually had me skimming the last 1/3 of the book to finish it. It reads like he just got too mired in describing every last visual of his fairy-clockwork world, as well as the endless action sequences, to the extent that he forgot to anchor all those elements to fundamentals like character motivation.
review 2: The joy of Bachmann's first two books is his willingness to play with the English language.
... moreAfter a steady month of hardcore, first person present tense, apocalypse-of-the-week teen books, it's nice to dive into this meander through fairyland. It's quirky and owes more than a little to the great 19th century fairy visionaries and artists like Brian Froud, but that's all the more reason to grab a copy and enjoy it. less

A little slow moving in parts but overall a beautifully written book.
