The Peculiar
review 1: It sickens me to my stomach that a nineteen year old can write a book that's this good. It's a brilliant story that combines dark fairie folklore, steampunk and a very Dickensian London to brilliant effect. The language and imagery is vivid, original and imaginative and the story is fascinating and compelling. This book can be enjoyed both by kids and adults (like me) alike. I tip my stove pipe hat to the ridiculously talented young author.
review 2: The Peculiar is a blend between a mystery, fantasy, and steampunk novel. Bachmann creates a very interesting world between the fairy creatures, airships, animatrons, proper gentry, and destitute masses that live in an alternate reality of Victorian England. The setting is the biggest selling point for the nove
... morel. The characters are entertaining and alternate between the views of Bartholomew-a changling or peculiar from the fairy slums, and Arthur Jelliby- a typically lazy and nieve man of privilege. The villain is Lord Lickerish and he is a deplorable villain. The story hindges around a series of changling murders and is quiet a bit darker than either the whimsical cover or back synopsis of the book suggest. It was in the upper elementary section for the book fair but I definitely think this is at least a middle school book or maybe high school just because of how dark it is. The end is a good cliff hanger and I well probably buy the next book just to see what happens next. less
