review 1: This book is one of the many books written about WWI. Since it's the 100th year 'celebration' (how I loathe that word!) you see all bookstores filled with them. I don't like stories about wars, but this one was recommended to me by someone who likes the same books as I do and she had it in her private collection and was kind enough to lend it to me. I decided to give it a try.The book is divided into different parts and tells the story about 2 boys, brothers, not by blood but by milk, who are adolescents when WWI starts. They grow apart, one of them eager to go and fight on the continent, the other reluctant, head in his books, ready to go to university. The story is built up beautifuly, not too fast, not too slow, exactly the way I like it. Very interesting and intriguing... more side characters who make the story even more worth reading.
review 2: Heel erg genoten van dit echt goed geschreven verhaal dat zich afspeelt tijdens WOI. Het is overduidelijk dat Brijs niet enkel een schitterend verteller is, maar ook een harde werker. Aan dit boek is heel wat research vooraf gegaan, hij slaagt erin om het landschap en de levensomstandigheden in Londen tijdens de oorlog en op de slagvelden in Frankrijk, tot leven te brengen. Het boek vertelt je het verhaal van een soldaat die eigenlijk tegen wil en dank deelneemt aan de oorlog en daar staande probeert te blijven. Als je één boek leest nav 100 jaar WOI dan zou ik dit toch met stip aanraden ! less
