Kat, Incorrigible
review 1: A fun (and not slavishly historical) romp through Regency England with the incorrigible Kat Stephenson! Magic in this world is inherited and scandalous. The fact that Kat uses her considerable untrained magical talent for the sole purpose of getting her older sisters married to men of their choice is hysterical! The allusions (to other fiction by Austen and otherwise) will add another layer to your enjoyment. EPL catalogues it as Jr High - but I think a savvy 4th - 5th grader might really get into it!
review 2: Kat's family struggles under the debts incurred by wastrel brother Charles. Stepmama is desperate for funds and so Elissa, the oldest sister, is expected to marry Sir Neville, a wealthy nobleman. The problem is that there are unsavory whispers about hi
... mores past, and his first wife--possibly murdered. Kat discovers that her middle sister, Angeline, has some big secrets, and then she discovers that she herself is possessed of some astonishing talents that require her to follow in her mother's footsteps as a Guardian. Will these talents also be enough to save her family from impending doom? Lighthearted enough to be a juvenile fiction book, yet substantive enough for a decent plot, this romp of a book is charming from beginning to end, and we hope for more installments featuring the intrepid 12-year-old Kat. She reminds me a little of Flavia de Luce. Gr. 5-up. less
