review 1: While the writing did not mature as the characters did - it was still an enjoyable series. I assume that the short novella will wrap up loose ends in regards to Charles + Jane and Kat + Alexander. I think it's wonderful how Burgis portrayed Kat as a very headstrong character throughout the series but hasn't delved into her appearance much so we as the audience focus on Kat as a strong female lead instead of falling into love like every bloody female character in every single novel. Instead we see the budding romance between her and Alexander as innocent. I am very interested to see how she progresses as a character when she is introduced into society!
review 2: The conclusion of the trilogy finds Kat and her family preparing to travel to the estate of Angeline'
... mores fiance. All is not well, when their carriage has a terrible accident along the way. Then Angeline's future mother-in-law does her best to make the family feel unwelcome; and to top it off, someone seems to be following Kat, and he means her harm. But how can Kat use any of her Guardian powers and save the day, when her newly sober brother Charles won't let her out of his sight? Burgis does a better job in this book, creating characters of deeper substance to better anchor the constant chaos that Kat attracts. Kat herself, only 13, is given far too much importance by the adults around her, which just does not feel very authentic. And her headstrong nature grows tiresome quickly. Otherwise, this is a fun romp and a good ending to the series. 5th grade and up. less
