review 2: Barnaby Adair, sleuth amongst the ton, accompanies Inspector Stokes to the Scene of a Ghastly Murder. Aided by the need to take note of the scene, characters and context in order to satisfy the curiosity of their respective sleuthing wives the two men set about discovering things and reporting back. The trouble with the novella plot being that as soon as there is a murder at a country house gathering it starts trying to beat Agatha Christie at her own game and, with all due respect, the historical romance/murder mystery novel would have been a car crash had Christie tried to write them and Laurens also struggles to reconcile the two genres without failing to do justice to either.It was OK. But there was nothing that really grabbed my attention in this book and only past affection for the characters carried me along to the end. less
