review 1: As a fan of Stephen Booth's Cooper and Fry series, I was rather disappointed with this one. The first half of the novel had no plot development whatsoever. Instead, the reader got endless descriptions of landscape, what seems like the entire history of the city of Birmingham both architecturally and socially, tiresome explanations of Police procedural and acronyms, and so on.And even when the pace did pick up in the second half, the plot was somewhat contrived.I am very sorry to say that I really did not appreciate this one. But I'll definitely give the next one a try again.
review 2: This is the tenth book in the Cooper/Fry series I have read. The series started so well - tight, plausible, twisty plots and excellent lead and supporting characters, set in an a... morerea that I know pretty well. The series now seems rather tired, by about book 5 the plots became laboured, but interest was still maintained by the characters. However, this latest in the series has underwhelming plots (so obvious) and my sympathy for Fry and Cooper has been completely lost. The scene setting is appallingly clunky, the wikipedia-like descriptions of Birmingham are tedious. Finally, I do wonder about policing the football matches at Edendale - this has been mentioned in previous books in the series, but now it is established that they, like Buxton and Matlock, are an Evo-stik Northern Premier side, I would suggest that the policing requirements are zero unless FCUM are in town. less
