review 1: I en by på engelska landsbygden hittas en kvinna mördad i sitt kök. Hennes man är svårt skadad. Blickarna riktas mot en rånarliga som härjar i trakten, men inget tycks vara stulet. Mordutredningen leds av Ben Cooper. Han upptäcker snart att invånarna i byn är mer angelägna att skydda sig själva än att hjälpa polisen. Girighet, avund och bittra grannfejder ligger och jäser under ytan. Snart in träffar ännu ett mord.
review 2: 'Twas okay. Taking up a mystery series well on into said series may not be the best way to enjoy the mystery but somehow that is what has happened with the Cooper and Fry series for me. So far I have read two and neither fully entranced me though I tend to love a good British mystery. The plot unwinds incredibly slowly wi... moreth lots of atmosphere and lots of information about lots of people but not much that feels like actual clues. Having missed the first 9 or 10 books in the series perhaps this character driven mystery, and I feel like the Peaks District ranks as a character, is more engaging if you've followed everyone all along but I kept wondering why it was a Cooper and Fry mystery since Fry seemed to be mostly off elsewhere, bored at a training, mostly weighing in on how miserable living in Derbyshire makes her. Also, Ben's girlfriend Liz? She's a SOCO, scene of crime specialist who shows up now and again but is so flat and lifeless, if he's going to marry her she needs to find a personality and fast. Maybe she had one in the previous book, when they presumably got engaged. The mystery itself resolves satisfactorily and does a fair job of standing on it's own story wise but otherwise, just a bit on the blah side of okay for me. I will probably not be picking up another, at least not on purpose. less
