Ben Cooper & Diane Fry
review 1: I have to admit that I read this episode in the Cooper/Fry series out of order, but luckily, the author gives quite a bit of information about what happened in the previous novel since it has a great deal of impact on the story line. Cooper is on medical leave after being involved in a tragic fire but he cannot leave the arson case alone. He takes to driving around at night as he tries to heal both mentally and physically and comes across information relevant to current inquiries and pursues his own investigation. Water is a big part of this novel, both in the crimes committed and in the disastrous state of the area after torrential rain causes widespread flooding. This adds to the menacing atmosphere and is part of Cooper's struggle to get to grips with what happene... mored. Meanwhile, Fry finds herself back in Edendale replacing Cooper and their thorny relationship continues with internal police politics very much a part of the mix. A great read...I now want to go back and read the book I missed...and await the next chapter with anticipation.
review 2: I was really looking forward to reading this latest in the Ben Cooper/Diane Fry series and it did not disappoint. In the aftermath of "Dead and Buried" which ended badly for Ben, things have not improved for him so far and he is on medical leave and totally in despair. Diane Fry has been brought in to breach staff shortages and lead the team in Ben's absence and is hating being back there. Diane is a very socially awkward individual, to say the least, not a people person. Gavin Murfin is back to provide comic relief, although having taken retirement, he is back at work as a "Mentor", not quite sure what that means and neither does Gavin by the sounds of it. The team have a mysterious death on their hands, a naked man is found dead in shallow water in a very badly flooded wooded area, he has no real suspicious injuries, but has died as a result of drowning. His car is found some miles away, so how did he get there? This story also centers around Ben and his state of mind and the investigation into the man's death and Ben's story, do have a common factor. Somehow, Ben finds himself being drawn into the investigation and also finds some answers to the Lighthouse Pub fire (previous book). You really do need to read these books in sequence or you will be lost. There is some good humour, mainly in the form of Gavin Murfin, Diane is definetly softening in this book and thank goodness for that, I was really disliking her for a while and the plot was well written and plausible. I do hope Ben comes back from his dark place and gets back to work again. Please write another Mr. Booth!!! less
