review 1: An enjoyable read though with some misgivings. The female characters aren't terribly convincingly depicted, with the female protagonist, Fry, very hard to warm to. (This, Book 9, is the first Cooper & Fry book I've read so maybe I need to start at the beginning?) I found the plot interesting though one part seemed to have a very sudden resolution. I also learned a fair bit about the Hunt (which I'd thought had died out after the legislation!), the horse meat trade, the Cold War and the Royal Observer Corp (which was only stood down on 31.12.95). The best part of the novel for me was the Peak District setting where I've actually walked a lot of the places mentioned and which was very realistically portrayed, as if it was a central character in the book. (I listened to this ... moreas an audiobook and the narrator, striving for authenticity, used a very strong local accent, rarely pronouncing an initial 'h' or a final 't'. This meant that for the first part of the plot I was hearing "unsaboteurs" every time he said "hunt saboteurs" which confused me somewhat at the start! Be warned, audiobook users!)
review 2: Wwweeelllll....I enjoy the fact that Booth includes elements of the history of the Peaks district in all his books, but I wasn't so fond of the atomic bomb watch shelters featured in this one. But the exploration of the horse meat business was fascinating! Fry is still getting on my nerves. Cooper stands up to her a bit better, but I really wish they could work together better as a team. The books would be considerably more enjoyable if ANYONE in that police station actually liked anyone else! less
