review 1: For a book about consumption and over usage, this sure didn't need that many pages. I get that he's trying to express the information in readable and less scholarly ways and that the pages with just 1 or 2 sentences on them are about impact and drama, but still- hypocritical much? Aside from that, this book is frightening, hopeless and extreme and made me feel ignorant and scared and possibly like running up to Winchester and joining the local Green Party group. For someone who didn't excel at science or maths past GCSE level, the information is concise and easy to understand, making the gravity of the situation described to you even more worrisome. It's definitely a vital read and it's made me question why our politicians aren't fighting these environmental battles everyda... morey. Downside- no solutions are offered, he details many failed attempts at environmental projects and fills us all with dread. However, I do love the design of this edition, especially the graduated blank pages at the back moving from white to black, very good indeed Mr Emmott.
review 2: This is a ballsy, aggressive book that leaves the reader in no doubt about our situation with regards to climate change and population growth. The frustration of the author seeps off of every page and I for one feel his pain. There are only three acceptable positions on climate change - 1. You agree wholly with scientists like Emmott and think that we should have dropped the ego-science projects and started working hard on this issue as a planetary wide species years ago. 2. You agree that climate change is happening but are not convinced that it is man-induced, still you'd like something done about it or 3. You are not convinced by the science or that climate change is man-induced but, Pascal-like, you think it may be smart to take steps because man, it sure is getting hot in here. If you have opinions outside of these three then you are probably ill-informed, right-wing, or in the pay of the large corporations who like the status quo very much. It really is time to ignore the nay sayers and move on.Talking of nay sayers I had to listen to Peter Lilley, the British Minister for Fairy Tales, on a politics podcast just last week claiming to be a 'scientist' and making comments like "CO2 cannot be causing the effects attributed to it because it's just a weak colorless gas" - sure but what about methane? Or nitrous oxide? Emmott deals devastatingly directly with idiotic claims such as Lilley's, without naming names. Lilley then said that climate change can't be happening because "it hasn't gotten any hotter over the last few years" - wow, some scientist eh?I put my trust in people like Emmott who seem to have a good grasp on reality, not to mention a wide ranging appreciation of both science and sociology. I notice some reviewers on here have accused him of bending the facts and of using weak science - unfortunately I'm not best placed to judge that. I am impressed by the force of his sociological and political arguments though, two areas that I do know something about, and I believe to the last letter his analysis that we will not do anything serious about climate change while governments and corporations are colluding to make as much money as possible out of gas and oil.I wont deal with the reviewers who accused him of hypocrisy because of not having every page filled with type, these accusations are akin to governments telling us to help out on the "environment" by turning off our fridge lights. Let's just say that some people will never see the real issue. This is a scary book with a scary conclusion. I have to agree with the precise wording of Emmott's summing up - "I think we're fucked". less

A very depressing read and leaves you feeling helpless but also a very powerful and important read.
