review 1: That was much better than I expected it to be. I'm always hesitant when an author writes a book meant to fall in the middle of a series long after the series itself is concluded. But I think King managed to recreate everything about #4 that made it great without having it be a throwaway volume meant to fill in plot holes. More than that, it actually injected some much needed historical context to the entire story. Solid all the way around.
review 2: It is so nice to be able to read another story of Roland and his ka-tet and feel like there was never a gap in their tale. A quick and easy read, you really don't need to have read any of the other books to enjoy this story. As with many of King's tales, there are tendrils which connect it to other books, including
... morethose outside of the Dark Tower series, and I always enjoy those little glimmers and references. less
