review 1: Pretty amazing book from an amazing person. The main idea of the book is that a lot of time the 2 alternative choices or ideas are not ideal. What we should do then is:1. ASK: "Would you like to find a better solution?"2. DEFINE: "How should it look?"3. CREATE alternatives: Midmapping, brainstorming, creating models, drawing on the board - playing.4. FIND the 3rd alternative that is born from the 2 unique view points. When it's found, the tension and doubts disappear. To effectively follow the 3rd alternative a reasonable level of consciousness is required. This means, you will have to be leave your ego aside and be fully open to empathetically listen to another person. To achieve that you might want to follow the GET formula to deal with 3 obstacles that are in the way of ... morereaching the 3rd alternative:1. Get - getting personal value, focusing on your personal gain, not the sulution, selfishness.2. Emotions - this includes our self image, insecurities and fears.3. Territory - again, focusing on your side - my company, my business deal, my case.Only when you become conscious of these 3, can you effectively communicate with other people and synergize in order to create effective win-win solutions. So it's no more of "my way" or "your way". It's OUR WAY.Developing these skills is a necessity and we should be doing it daily. As our consciousness is rising, this is the natural way to communicate.Good luck finding the 3rd alternatives in your life! :)
review 2: The most immediate thought I had when reading Covey's "Third Altenative" was "if only". If only people could see two sides to an argument and develop a third alternative better than either of the two sides, what a great place the world would be! Seeing the opportunity and advantage of differing opinions and to synergize instead of compromise, would move people and organizations to much closer to effectiveness. less
