review 1: The Darling Dahlias and the Texas Star by Susan Wittig AlbertChallenges read for: Goodreads, EBook, Historical Fiction, Women AuthorsBook Cover: Typical of SAW's books, and just okayI really do like settling in for a quick, cozy read with one of SAW's mysteries. I have read all of her China Bayles series and am reading all of her Darling Dahlia series. But, The Texas Star was somewhat lacking. By the time we got to most of the characters sporting black eyes, I thought it was downright silly. The series takes place in 1930's Alabama. The scene is set for hard times, making do with what you've got, but also with a strong sense of community. And I love those historical details! The story does, however, explore the lives of two of the character's we really do not know m... moreuch about: Charlie Dickens, and Myra May. Charlie is friends with The Texas Star, the famous aviatrix whose life and career are being sabotaged by someone close to her, and of course The Dahlia's love a good mystery and jump right in to assist. We also learn of the connection between the new woman in town taking the place of the head cook at Myra May's diner and Myra May herself.Loaded with historical detail, strong characters, and even some recipes, it is a quick read and for those that love "cozy mysteries", and OK book.
review 2: Not strictly a mystery--though there are some nefarious goings-on, no dead bodies are found and the reader is in on the hows and whos right along with the characters--but a nice visit with the folks of Darling, Alabama, where everybody's business is...well, everybody's business. The likeable characters are a pleasure to follow about as they solve their everyday problems and try to figure out their relationships, while dealing with the excitement of the coming barnstorming air show and its beautiful, scheming star who already seems to have two Darling men under her spell. less

Nice mystery, fun characters. Set in summer of 1932 in the deep south.

Charming as always, but not as good as her previous books.
