review 1: This memoir of childhood is salty and clever. Susanna Kaysen (she wrote "Girl, Interrupted") was a precocious, bratty and negative child who had huge feelings and observed everything in sharp focus. (Or at least the adult version of her thinks she did.) Her family moved from Cambridge, MA to European cities several times, leading ther to fetishize Cambridge as "Home" until it can't take it anymore. Again this child was a defensive know it all, superior and remote. If the writing weren't so acerbic and zesty I'd have given up on the book early on.
