review 1: "Dear George Clooney: Please Marry My Mom", is about a girl named Violet who is frustrated with her life for many reasons. She has so many things to fret about and so much on her mind. First of all, her father has re-married to a blonde actress he met while directing a movie, which Violet is not so thrilled about. Also, he has two new daughters who Violet feels replaces her, leaving an empty hole in her heart. Throughout the book, things begin to change, dramatically... Violets mother starts dating again and things do not go well, that is, until she meets Douglas Wiener. Violet and her BFF, Phoebe, decide to take matters into their own hands. This is where things get interesting. Violet seems to go on a roller coaster of emotions throughout this book including, sadness,... more humor, and adventure. I would recommend this book to any girl between the ages of 10-14 and anyone who relishes reading real-life fiction.
review 2: I really loved Nielson’s most recent book, THE RELUCTANT JOURNAL OF HENRY K LARSON, so when I spotted this one at the library I snapped it up. It took me a few chapters to get into this, and a few more chapters to start liking the snarky protagonist, Violet. Nielson is very good at creating complex realistic yet still entertaining characters and stories. This one leaves several things unresolved. Several characters are slightly mysterious. Nothing really ties up neatly. And yet the story concludes in a very satisfying way. I would recommend this to older middle graders who want a witty reality based read. less
