review 1: So much cooler than regular 'ole telekenetic 'Carrie', Mage is turning into a witch of epic proportions. Progressing in her abilities at a young age, she fully comes into her powers once she turns sixteen. Awkward, shy, and treated like a leper by the kids at her high school, Mage is used to floating through class without having any friends or emotional attachments. Then, a new girl moves to town and decides to be Mage's friend, and a boy she has crushed on since they were youngsters seems to be taking an overt interest in her. Could Mage's life get any weirder? Uh, yes - it can.I enjoyed this book and thought the paranormal twist was pretty unique in the genre. Of course we have a socially outcast girl, which is pretty typical in a teen angsty novel - but in this novel Ma... morege becomes reborn. She shows a resilience of spirit and a will to persevere, regardless of what family secrets she uncovers. Ultimately the story is kind of a downer, and the reader is left hoping for Mage to get a bit of sunshine in her life. The voice of Mage seems pretty spot-on as far as coming from a fifteen-to-sixteen year old, but at times this made it a little difficult to empathize with the characters as they were described. All in all, an enjoyable book suitable for readers 15+ who enjoy paranormal romance.
review 2: I thought this book was a stereotypical representation of the YA genre.1. A girl has magic powers (Though it was very interesting that she knew about them and could control a little bit of it).2. Girl falls for a hot guy who knows of her 'creepy' powers.3. Evil people come in and convince the hot guy that the only way to save/protect his true love is for him to completely avoid and ignore her.4. Girl gets him back, but later in the book wishes to protect him by staying away from him, so she gives him the excuse that she 'needs space.'And then, there were some stupid things in the book said girl did which got me so frustrated, but I can only remember two events clearly (It took me some time to get through this book, so I can't remember everything). She never even READ one of the MANY books in this HUGE library. I don't recall anyone telling her she couldn't, and she said she loved reading, so why not read the library books! And when she had those nightmares and her grandmother (who didn't tell the girl why this was happening) said for her to tell them to the girl's grandfather, and did she? NO! She didn't. Why? Because he had a mental disease, and she didn't want to talk to him with his constant mistaking the girl for her mother.*sigh*Also, when the grandfather suddenly had a break from his mental illness, it felt forced because the girl said that he had never gone back to reality before. It really felt like just a cause for the girl to finally tell her grandfather the nightmare, and guess what? He doesn't tell her anything except that everything will be all right and she'll understand soon... Then, when she questions him more, his mind gets pulled under by the disease. It all felt very forced, like it was all just for her to actually tell him the stupid nightmare. It was very cheesy, in my opinion, that the father went along with his father's plan to seduce the girl's mother in order to create the girl for his father's evil plan, but then fell in love with the girl's mother and 'protected' her by staying away...And then, the mother gives the same excuse as to why she wasn't in the girl's life earlier: she was 'protecting' her by staying away from her...I hope you can see why I'm frustrated. Personally, if you made it this far down the review, I applaud you for being able to deal with so much negativity. Not to say it wasn't all bad, just the last third/quarter of it was cheesy/stereotypical.The first half, at least, was very interesting... It just happened to deteriorate from there until the very end, like, the last couple of chapters when it picked up a bit.I must end this review here, but I have to say that I probably won't pick up the sequel unless I feel a burning need.Thank you for reading my review and I hope it helps in any way! ^_^ less
