review 1: I read books 1 and 2 of this. The characters were interesting as was the world building. I kept waiting for it to get better but it just never did. And by better, I mean that the main character would have some kind of personal growth. Clara is essentially the same at the end of book 2 as the beginning of book 1 which is disappointing as a lot has happened in between. There are also a load of plot inconsistencies.I was also disturbed by the constant beatings. There is a lot of abuse that occurs through the two books that I read. The character dynamics are very unhealthy and by the end of book 2 didn't seem like it was going to get any better. If there's going to be abuse, I need someone to learn from the situation and change.
review 2: There were quite a few
... more problems with these books, to my mind. I could handle the strange, virtually unexplained societies that the novel expected you to follow - with little understanding of how they came to exist in the way they did - both socially and environmentally - but the romance (which, really, is the whole damn point) was just SO FRUSTRATING.I understand love triangles. What I don't understand is a seven-way love FIASCO.The main character is something called a 'select' (a term that I did not understand until it was rehashed for the fifteenth time it was that vague to me) and therefore has her pick of the most athletic, buff men of the clan. FUN TIMES, one might think. But no. It was just frustrating. All you get is a few kisses and lo and behold - she is in love with everyone and cannot make up her mind and three books later you're no closer to an answer. Don't keep your readers guessing that long, they will give up. And more than that, some of the characters seem to change purpose half-way through. The best friend is suddenly the enemy, but earlier he was passionately and purely in love with her? SO CONFUSING.These were certainly some confused books. less
