review 1: An entertaining, yet not idealized, look at life in Delhi from the point of view of a somewhat pompous middle-aged overweight detective. This mystery seemed a little more confusing to me because of a large number of characters, several concurrent investigations, Puri's employees only identified by nicknames (Handbrake, Tubelight, Facecream, etc.) and the world of cricket which was foreign to me. (For example, what does "a full toss going for a sixer" mean?) But I enjoyed the humour, the setting, and for this one in particular, the historical context: partition in 1947, which created the country of Pakistan, and led to chaos, massacres and continuing hatred.
review 2: Sam Dastor's narration of the Vish Puri mysteries transports the listener straight to India, wi
... moreth his native accent and inflection. A humorous mystery with a host of characters. Laugh out loud funny at times - for ex., this excerpt from an exchange between Puri and one of his Mumbai sources: "Ji, Uncle," she replied. "He was dedu foot so couldn't reach the punkah. Plus, he was totally fultoo and doing balle balle with his biscuit." Translation: "He was a short man, so he couldn't have reached the ceiling fan with a rope with which he is alleged to have hung himself. Also, he was extremely drunk and there's every reason to believe that he was 'making happiness' with his mistress before he was killed." less
