review 1: I LOVED this book. Tarquin Hall's books are compared to Alexander McCall Smith's No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency Series, which is my go to series for humor, kindness, musings on life, the richness of Botswana and its culture, and lovable characters. The first installment in Hall's series does remind me of Smith, and I will definitely be listening to the rest of the series. The Case of the Missing Servant is fun and funny. At the same time, Hall paints such a vivid picture of India--the good and the bad--the gap between the rich and the poor, the corruption, the food, the politics, the state of marriage, the role of men and women. Delightful characters. Perfectly nuanced. Perfectly executed. Perfectly narrated. A delightful listen.

... moreto me on Goodreads because it's like the "Number 1 Ladies Detective Agency" series which I love! I can see how they are similar, but this definitely isn't as good as that series. This one follows Detective Puri as he tries to solve the case of a servant who disappeared and whose death is being blamed on her former employer, a very upstanding lawyer. Along with this case Puri is trying to solve one about a fiance the future father-in-law doesn't trust and an attempt on Puri's own life. The cases were good and interesting without it being terribly evident right off what the solution was going to be. I also liked the writing overall. Puri as a character wasn't very likable. I'm not sure why I didn't like him as much as I probably should have, but it might be because he wasn't very endearing. He was a bit full of himself and liked to brag. I like my detectives intelligent but modest. less
