review 1: I wanted to enjoy this book but found it disappointing. The details concerning the immense reconstruction of Paris was something I knew next to nothing about and I enjoy a novel that makes me aware historical information while entertaining me. However, the entertainment value is greatly lacking. The momentum of the storyline is heavily bogged down by details such as street names, parks and business locations that fail to "paint a mental picture" and cloud the process of bonding with the characters. As a result, what was intended to be the height and subsequent culmination of the novel does not really surprise and seems uneventful.
review 2: The author's premise is an interesting one -- what, she wonders, would it have been like to be living in Paris when Napol
... moreeon and Baron Haussmann began tearing down buildings to build the grand boulevards we love today? It is written from the POV of an old lady living in one of the houses to be torn down. The first person, letter style (she writes to her deceased husband) became tedious after a while. It seemed to me that the ending should have been placed at the beginning of the book. Everything else was just a lengthy backstory. The author's bestselling novel, Sarah's Key, was infinitely better. less
