review 1: I actually read this book last year but it just came up on the book of the day and reminded me that I was so completely obsessed with this series I couldn't wait to get each of the next books. I ran into a clog at the library, I believe, getting the last book, and that's how they fell off my radar, but having been reminded I'm getting right on the wait list! These are fabulous books, intense, seriously adult themes (abuse, rape, torture, child endangerment, etc...) but they're so interesting and have such a great cast of characters, I could never put the book down for long.Honestly, the plot didn't even matter as much as the atmosphere and the mood and the intensity of the books. However, basically, Vanessa is the daughter of missionaries who basically didn't think they c... moreould have another child, then late in life here she came. So she has much older siblings (at least one brother) and her parents basically let her run wild in Africa getting education every which where. One of the places she got education was essentially a junta, with an enigmatic knife-fighter who trained her, fought with her, and when she was "old enough" began raping her every time she lost. She could never win, until finally she laid in wait and killed him.So you see that Vanessa is not exactly the most mentally and emotionally stable of individuals, for good reason. However, her upbringing has made her a chameleon of sorts, she can blend in anywhere, and speaks a dozen different languages and dialects. She does amazing things in these books and as far-fetched as they might be, the way they're written is so good that you really want to believe it's possible.I need to go check out the rest of the series...HIGHLY recommended.Book of the day for December 18, 2014!
review 2: I liked this book and the character of Vanessa Michael Munroe. The story of her early life is both sad and depressing. She has had a hard life but she makes due with the skills she has acquired. She knows she is not a so-called normal person who can live a life most people dream of but can only go from place to place obtaining information for money. But this time she takes on a missing person case and tries to find a girl missing for 4 years in the jungles of Africa. This was an exciting and very thrilling book and would highly recommend it. This is the first book in the series and you get to meet the main characters that are present in the other books. less
