review 1: If you enjoy mystery thrillers, then you will enjoy 'The Informationist.' I was really sad when Stieg Larsson died, and the Lisbeth Salander (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) series ended. Vanessa Michael Munroe is quite similar to Lisbeth, in that they both are victims of an abusive past that fuels a lot of rage, both highly intelligent, both androgynous females, although Munroe actually goes into male character quite often to achieve her objectives. The only problem that I had with the book was that Munroe was a little over-the-top in her skill set, such that she can speak 22 languages or dialects, knows how to kill someone in multiple ways, and seems to have no kryptonite whatsoever that could stop her. Having said that, the plot was engaging and intelligent, and the... morere is plenty of action to entertain one from start to finish. I also learned quite a lot about central Africa, especially Equatorial Guinea. This is the first in a series about this character, and I will be interested to see how she evolves.
review 2: Fast-paced summer thriller with a few (very few, but each is refreshing) really excellent insights into the ugliness of the anarchy into which most African countries have descended. The main character is nominally a woman but for all intents and purposes, a super-hero, with the ability to learn languages within days and then retain them forever; healing powers that allow her to get shot and recover in a matter of days; fighting skills that let her best up to ten men (trained killers, even!) at a go (leaving them all bloody and lifeless around her); intellect and maturity that gave her a wise-guy's mouth and a wise-man's perspicacity and foresight even as a teen; and beauty and charm enough to (of course!) turn all men's heads and win the hearts of the best of them. It's a bit much. In fact, it's WAY too much. But the story, predictable as it is, is fast-paced and fun in a brutal, silly, blockbuster kind of way. It's pretty much a Michael Bay movie on the page. less
