review 1: I enjoyed this book thoroughly but until now, starting to read another of TC Boyle's island stories (San Miguel) I hadn't realized that I never wrote a review of Killing's Done. So here is a retrospective. Yes, the book is about killing, not humans but unwanted invasive animals destroying some special habitats. The book has two main characters, Alma Boyd Takesuea nd Dave Lajoy. Both might be termed environmentalists, at least they concern themselves with their surroundings, passionately and completely opposed to one another. Alma is an employee of the National Park Service, trying to get rid of the rats on Anacapa island and boars on Santa Cruz island, both off the coast of California. Lajoy is an unlikeable, devious, mean guy out to defeat people like Alma.Of course, as i... moren all Boyle's books, its the twists and turns of the plot and the convolutions of the characters actions that keep me engaged. This book has a lot of Channel Island history as well as adventures and some surprises too. A good read.
review 2: Well conceived ecological "savior" novel where the protagonist is actually the one trying to put an environment back in balance......through the annihilation of the invading species. Several side stories add spice to the misguided efforts of those trying to stop the extermination. It all takes place in the Channel Islands off the Santa Barbara coast and this setting is brought to life to the extent that the breathing of salt air erupts from every page. I kept expecting certain changes in the plot that never materialized and that became a good thing as I was constantly surprised with what did occur. Thumbs up! less
