review 1: This was not the best Alex Hawke novel. Don't get me wrong, it was still pretty good, but not quite as good as previous Hawke outings. The plot was not tight, as things seemed to happen out of sequence or in ways that didn't make sense. The characters took a long time to figure out things that seem obvious to the reader. Ted Bell left the ending of one plot line just hanging out there and the end of the main plot line simply stopped. The epilogue, where I expected some denouement, and all we got was Hawke ending up with the girl. While I expect Hawke to end up with the girl, I also expect to understand what happened after the climactic battle at the end, where Hawke saved the world. Don't get me wrong, there was a lot to love about this book, with characters like Ha... morewke, Stokely Jones, Ambrose Congreve and the Thunder and Lightning guys. Ted Bell has created a great character and great series with Alex Hawke, but he sort of mailed this one in.
review 2: Just a good old rip snorting, balls to the wall story this is. Alexander Hawke is an aristocratic, action hungry badass, plain and simple. Yes, there is always a woman or two along the way and his kid is there for interesting side story stuff but these books are all about action and the cataclysmic world disasters that Lord Hawke is called upon to resolve. This one is a beaut, with preposterous and not so preposterous scenarios one after another. It moves from beginning to end. I only got turned on to Ted Bell a couple of books ago and I just enjoy his style to death. Big fun! less

Not as good as normal Trd Bell. Somewhat tamer, not as edgy. Too bad.
