review 1: As great a book as I remembered from last time. Fun characters, interesting plot, fantastic world-building... Took me a while to get into again, though (this was my second time through the book), and it definitely doesn't have a climax--it and it's sister volume, The Measure of the Magic, are definitely a single story. May I say again, Mr. Brooks, that I really do enjoy all of your stories and the entire Shannara world. It's so interesting and fascinating to read the story of how the world became the way it is in the future novels.The Shannara Mega Read goes on!
review 2: Although Terry Brooks will always be one of my favourite authors I found this book a little predictable and, unfortunately, I couldn't bring myself to finish it, wanting rather to move on to s... moreomething with a bit more teeth and where I don't know what's coming. I will not be reading the second book in this short series as it doesn't draw me to it.Perhaps I will return to one of my favourite tales at another time when all I'm looking for is something light and quick. I hate leaving a tale unread, no matter how unsatisfying. But for now Legends of Shannara is at the bottom of my to-read list.For fans, Bearers of the Black Staff is what you'd expect from Brooks. I love his meticulous attention to detail and fantastic characters, but you might find the story (and characters) somewhat familiar and repetitive. Nothing grabbed me, but perhaps Book 2 is better. Give it a try. less
