review 1: This novel is the beginning of a new trilogy in his Shannara realm. New readers can start here but it is not the ideal starting point. In this book over a century has passed from his last novel. The Druids and the Federation are at odds. The Druids have uncovered evidence of how to find the old magic that has been mentioned in several novels and once again they set out on a quest. Even though this sounds familiar and formulaic it works and this is an enjoyable novel.I enjoyed the beginning of this trilogy. Within pages I felt as if I was visiting a long lost friend as I was immediately plunged back into this world. I do admit that the author does have a formula to his books but it works as he puts a different twist on it and you find yourself wondering how it is going to t... moreurn out. I believed this novel contains his best action scenes in any novel and the battle of one particular stronghold was a joy to read. I also thought he delved deeper into side storylines with his characters than he has done in the past and it was a welcome addition.I believe that this is a must read for fans of this realm.
review 2: The series begins 100 years after the original blockbuster which was a bit confusing given all the subsequent series that followed-- the reader had to go back and recall original detailsThat said it was exciting enough and held interest for sure-- i would only say the advancement of science in the Federation takes the series a bit away form the strict Fantasy Genre into the borders with straight Sci Fi that many of us don't favor as much. This is not an unimportant to make and should not be lost sight of. less
