review 1: 3.5 stars. I liked the mystery behind Kate's birth/childhood and the hints of unknown history between her and Thorne. What gave me pause was the "redemption of a difficult man just by force of love" trope. While I certainly agree with the sometimes delicious angst it can give a romance story, I can't go for it in real life. It just means some extra suspension of disbelief... which I'm already doing in a romance novel so it's OK :-)
review 2: This book was my intro to Tessa Dare's writing, which seems like a modern twist on historical romance, as the plot line is fairly unique and uncharacteristic aspects like lesbian lovers are present. The sex scene, which took a long time coming, was unexpectedly powerful, even though Kate turns from typical virgin damsel... more to vixen rather too quickly to be consequential, has a contemporary feel to it, but was wonderfully enjoyable nonetheless. less
