review 1: Horrible. Absolutely shallow. Reads like he had a young apprentice pitching him IT terms from wikipedia he only understood half but felt obliged to work into the novel. The plot is so see-through it hurts seeing it unfold exactly as expected/feared. A rock has more emotional depth than the characters depicted. I forced myself till page 360 but the 100th repetition of the term 'back in meatspace' finally signaled that reading any further would be an utter waste of time. Why Pynchon feels the necessity to demolish his reputation in such way remains a mystery. As much as the positive reviews.
review 2: Pynchon can still play with words and slip in cultural references (pop and otherwise) with the best of them. This is the most fascinating and enjoyable 9-11-themed
... more novel I've read, with plenty to say about the internet, NYC under Giuliani, yuppies, patriotic browbeating, and all kinds of other tangents. Not surprisingly, given some of Pynchon's past work, I found the story a bit hard to follow at times--though compared to V and Gravity's Rainbow, this is a breeze--and, it's a testament to the quality of his writing that although I never quite got a handle on the book's main point, if there is one, I enjoyed the hell out of it. less
