Bear, Otter, and the Kid
review 1: Who doesn’t love Bear, Otter, and the Kid? Anybody? How could you NOT love them? They are broken, damaged, incredible and amazing all wrapped up together. They make a great team, the three of them, but they aren’t alone in this. Whatever this is…..I don’t think they know, they are afraid, afraid to believe and have hope. But the strength they contain and courage they gain, they will figure out what this is. Each bring their own capabilities, their own problems, their own solutions, but together they are stronger, they form a bond, a bond that cannot be broken. The saying goes, “you are as strong as your weakest player”. Sometimes it takes a village to teach, raise and grow. Each person they surround themselves with is a puzzle piece. Take one away and it doesn... moret work, put them all together and it becomes whole. TJ Klune has constructed a family of misfits, each needing love, a place they fit, a place that will value their purpose, and by putting them all together, they create a loving, caring, and supportive family. The boys are finally moving into the Green Monstrosity, also known as, their home. They are going to be a real family. Do they have concerns, doubts, and a little uncertainty? Of course they do, part of that is what makes them who they are, the same parts we fell in love with. But they also have laughter, so much love, family and friends that will help to keep them on the right path. Tyson will start his counselling, try to make sense out of their fu uh, crazy life. They will also go thru the red tape of caseworkers delving into every little private moment or conversations they’ve ever had. Tyson will start a new school, meet his new teacher, and… so what if said teacher just so happens to have some inside knowledge of Otter, what he may taste like.Does that worry Bear, at all? You’re darn right it does, he discovers he has a jealous side, but Otter, perfect and oh so sweet, Otter, straightens him out. Heh. Also, there will be “let’s tell the parents about us”, time. Talk about nerve-wracking. I was a nervous wreck on their behalf. I was hoping everything would be okay, but you know as well as I do, how these things can take a 180-degree turn and before you can even blink, you find you are now in the pits of hell. Bear was certainly melting under the pressure. Will Mom and Dad be cool? We’ll see. One of the best things to ever happen, especially to Tyson, will be meeting Dominic. So sweet and meek is our Dom. Damaged and scarred more than any person, esp. a child, should ever be. Much more mature than his years, and instantly connects to Tyson. They will become, over time and years, like a lighthouse. Always watching, keeping a look-out for the other, and always, always, a beacon for each other putting them back on solid ground. And, it’s not as if they haven’t endured enough already, more than you would probably wish on your worst enemy. They have to go thru more!!!! As a result, their friendships will be tested, their loyalties tested, their strength and their love. They will hit bottom sometimes, but it seems there is always an outstretched hand, from somewhere, pulling them back, to the center, finding the balance once again restored. I know this seems doom and gloom, and they have their moments, for sure, but they also have so many wonderful and beautiful moments of love and laughter. Moments cherished and moments created, sometimes between Bear and Otter, or Creed and Anna, Tyson and Dominic, or all of them together. What we have is a self-made family, ready at any moment for whatever the situation may call for. They have lost a lot, no question, but they have gained so much more.TJ Klune has given life to his characters that no longer seem fiction, but more like close friends. He has given them a voice, a cause, and within his incredible vision, he has brought the pages to life and shared them with us. His portrayal of each one could easily be me, you, the neighbour next door. They are experiencing real life dilemmas and hardships. Normally, you have two MC’s the story focuses on, here it’s three, but more than that, every side character feels like one of the main characters. They all bring something of themselves to make the story. Without them, it wouldn’t be what it is. I feel they all come to an understanding… this is us, this is WHO WE ARE.
review 2: I really enjoy reading Bear's inner monologue no matter how far-fetched he may seem to sound. I mean, really, I have yet to meet a person with the same profound thinking as he does. The Kid, of course, so fragile, so smart and so lovable. With intelligence like that, he can basically conquer Seafare and turn them all into vicious vegetarian slaves. Otter, the anchor, the strong one. I don't really know what to add much about him. Sorry. He's great. :)SPOILERAnyway, proceeding on to the story itself, this had a few twist and turns that made me weep and laugh at the same time. I thought there would be third parties and other infidelity struggles but to my great joy and surprise, there was none. The first time that Bear went to the bathtub to let the earthquake pass, it was heartbreaking. I understood it but that doesn't mean I didn't shed a tear or more. When the accident happened, I didn't quite believe it since there were more bizarre twists that happened in the first book (Example: The damnable seagull) so I thought it must be a part of the Kid's great plan but it wasn't. It hurt to read that Mrs. Paquinn has joined Joseph (God love him).SPOILER ENDOverall, this is a great book to follow the first one. It answered some questions I didn't have and its nice to see how much Bear and The Kid have changed overtime. less
