review 1: I liked it but then lost interest at the beach dinner scene. The 9-year old kid was way too smart, too insightful. But there were a few LOL moments. And the writing is really good. Creed, in particular, had some great lines. "...defective gay." LOL.Because of this book and some of the comments regarding similarities to the movie, "Shelter," I decided to watch the movie. I LOVED the movie. While the plots are similar, the character personalities are completely different, and the humor that T.J. Klune has written is completely his own.
review 2: I purchased the book months ago, and I kept putting it off and picking something else in the end.. man, how I regret that. I should have picked this up sooner. Wonderful read, and a beautiful touching story.I love
... mored the Kid, with all my heart. I wanted to hug him and take care of him and tell him that everything was going to be okay, I wanted to do that just as much as Bear wanted to do that, or Otter, or any other of those that were part of that beautiful family. You see, Bear is a soon to be 18 year old kid when he introduces himself, he has a little brother, Ty, aka as the Kid. The evening before Bear turns 18 he finds a letter from his mom telling him that she's going away and she's leaving the Kid with him. From that moment, I hated her. After saying this I really don't want to go much into the plot, which actually leaves me with not much to say because I feel like anything else and I'll be giving the story away and nope... this is something that you should read and let it surprise you, and make you smile, and get angry as fuck, and cry, and then let it comfort you. What I CAN say is that it's a wonderful love story. The chemistry between the two MC is amazing, and I swear you feel the love through the words you're reading. There is the beauty of a kid with a wise soul. There are friends and lovers and cool neighbours. There are two men in love trying to find their way together... and then trying not to lose that way.. There's heartbreak (lots of it) but there's also lots of love and lots of hope. I adored Otter probably more than I should. I loved how selfless he was in so many ways, and I loved how determined he was to fight for the man he loved, and not only for him, but also for the Kid he had with him. Bear crisped my nerves more than once. I wanted to throw cold water in his face and yell at him for being so stubborn, but in the end I wouldn't have done it (haha like that would ever be possible), because I understand where he was coming from, and I understand that he found himself in a position that he couldn't quite understand.. or name (not that I'm a fan of labels, tbh).I can safely say that this is one of my favorite M/M books, and I hope that anyone who reads it feels more or less the same way. less
