review 1: Having previously read "Torch Ginger," I thought I'd give this Hawaiian crime mystery novelist another chance to impress me. The reasons are same & similar. I love Hawaii, especially tales of the smaller islands, or sagas in smaller towns on the Big Island. Our protagonist is "damaged goods," a lady cop who's got a history of sexual abuse & neglect when she was a child. The predictable phenomena.....flashbacks, nightmares, difficulties with relationships. She gets involved in a double homicide of 2 teenage girls, and slowly but surely the case links up to umpteen other suspects, eras, and events. Not always easy to follow, but then again we wind up with multiple perpetrators. Predictable as to techniques and patterns, somewhat beyond realistic as to how outcomes ... moreplay out. Like I said early on, I like the genre & the venue, so for me a 3 star book morphs into 4 stars. Thankfully well proofread.
review 2: Take a tortured young woman with serious trust issues due to childhood trauma. Make her a police officer who discovers a horrible crime scene of murdered young women. She wants to prove herself so she can make Detective. Throw in a handsome detective who is put in charge of the investigation of the girls murders and who, despite her attempts to ignore him, make Lei tingle when he is near. Lei is also the subject of a stalker who may or may not be related to the crime they are investigating, throw in some neighbors and acquaintances who may or may not be out to get Lei and this poor woman doesn't know which way to turn. Handsome detective also appoints himself as her bodyguard. The pieces of the story unfold layer by layer and will keep you glued. Probably similar to a real investigation, some things are just innocent circumstances that have been misunderstood. I have to admit, I did figure out who I thought the bad folks were before the final reveal, but I wasn't sure so it didn't dampen my desire to get through the final pages. less
