review 1: The little white owl lives all alone in the snow. He has no friends and no family. One day he got curious about what was out in the big world. On his journey, he met some bright and colorful owls. At first they didn't want anything to do with him because he did not look like them. However, after he told them many colorful stories he had kept deep down, they never wanted his sTories to end! The owls promised to keep in touch when the snow owl had to return home. This story could teach children never to judge someone before they know them.
review 2: Title: The Little White Owl by Tracey Corderoy and Jane Chapman (2010).Short Description of the Book: This book is about a lonely white owl that doesn’t have a name, parents, or friends, but he was still happy. One
... more day he goes on a trip to see the world and finds rainbow colored owls. At first, the other owls do not want to talk to him or listen to him because he is different, but after listening to his happy stories, they become friends. This book helps to address diversity, but uses animals instead of people. Focus: Narrative features I would use in a mini-lesson:1)Using temporal words and phrases to sequence events. 2)You could also discuss the themes of friendship and diversity and possibly have students write their own stories with these themes. Teach:CCSS Connection-W.3.3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences. c. Use temporal words and phrases to signal event order. Mini-lesson Sequence-1)Discuss how authors use certain words to show the order that events happen in a story.2)Give examples of these temporal words such as: first, next, then, last, before, after, during, since (select words appropriate for your students/grade). 3)Read the story aloud, and have students listen for these words (Then one day, then he spotted, at last, but then, etc.)4)Use these words to help make a class retelling of the story. 5)Discuss how these words help the reader/audience to know when things happened. 6)Have students try adding temporal words and phrases to their narratives. 7)Have a few students share an example of when they use a temporal word or phrase in their writing. Expected Outcome: Students will be able to use temporal words to help sequence events in their stories. It should be noted that not all narratives have to be in sequential order, but it is a good starting place. Students could also write their own narratives with the theme of friendship or diversity. less
