review 2: This classic for struggling master's students everywhere is still worth reading.OK, some of the material is outdated. You may skip the section on how to find material in the library, or how to... more organize material into paper slips, because everybody uses computers these days. But the rest of the book holds up.One thing to admire is the clarity and grippingness of the prose. The book flows naturally without hiccups. Eco, the Professor-Uncle everybody can only love, makes intertextual referencing refreshing! He makes writing the index an incredible enjoyment and filling your footnotes effing fantastic fun. (OK, it's still not quite Name of the Rose, but hey, it's supposed to teach you something!)I am currently writing my master's thesis, and although some of the material in the book was old news to me, I learned a lot from those informative 200 pages, and even the stuff I _thought_ I knew I had probably forgotten, so revision was in order. When you're writing a good scientific paper, remembering good old tricks is just as important as learning new tricks.The only thing I worry is the conundrum: if I had spent the time I spent reading this book, and writing this review, writing my master's thesis instead, would I be closer to finishing it...? less
