review 1: It took me a while to get into this book. Some of my least favorite Star Trek episodes have involved criminal investigations, and I generally have not enjoyed when the crime-drama genre has been grafted into the series. I gave the evolving plot line a chance, though, and came to really enjoy the character of the Cardassian investigator. I also received a better understanding of the Garak character from DS9. The Enterprise crew have relatively minor roles in this book, as the author is very focused on fleshing out Cardassian society, and moving along plot points being developed for the Typhon Pact arc of the book series.
review 2: Let's be clear: This is not really a TNG novel. This is a novel about Garak, so really it's best suited for DS9 fans. It's enjoyable ... moreas such, but it's really just a placeholder in the TNG relaunch canon; there are major plot developments that will have an impact on the universe at large, but because our fearless Captain Picard and his crew were not involved in them at all, it just wasn't that exciting of a read.If you're a Garak fan, you might bump it to 3.5 stars. If you dislike Garak, knock it down to 2.5 or even 2 stars. less
