review 1: In the introduction to this books Le Guin mentions how she likes to use characters who normally wouldn't get a say to tell a story. This is an ingenious approach that never fails to create a unique perspective. Not only does it make for fabulous fiction but it is an important societal service to consistently challenge our expectations and force us to think in new ways. Our political leaders ought to be reading this! The value of this kind of imagination cannot be overstated. Le Guin's projections of potential societies feel so real, there is much to learn from them. But of course these tales are also quite entertaining so the learning is painless.
review 2: I love Ursula K. LeGuin and everything I have ever read of hers. This collection of short stories includ
... morees some older works which are very interesting and the series really helps to understand her development as a writer. Some of these, while short, are very serious and not easy reads. That's one of the things I love about her works, you need to take your time to savor every page. Each one of these stories will lead you into different paths of thought and reflection for several days after you finish reading it, so you kind of need to pace yourself and give each one time to settle in before you move on. That's my experience, anyway. less
