review 1: Colin - definitely a rake of the worst sort, given to drinking too much and wenching. However, he has an incredibly love of his mother who died when he was just a very young boy, and he's willing to do whatever it takes to maintain the ancestral home (unentailed) where she's buried. That says volumes about the character buried under the alcohol and women. His father presents him with the choice of marrying soon or losing the home altogether. Colin gets six weeks to show him he's serious about maintaining the manor (and he's supposed to find a wife too) before Daddy sells the house.Angeline - Strong-willed but with a heart to the point where she's willing to help someone she's never gotten along. She agrees to help Colin with some of the planning for restoration, having red... moreecorated one of her family's homes with spectacular results. These two played well off each other and I never got the feeling that the romance between them was forced. Daddy dearest was a crafty old man in his plot to get Colin married and settled down.I adored the Marquis (Daddy dearest) and Angeline's father (a duke). The two old men were fun with their love of hunting, despite the fact that apparently they couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. I know my last few reviews have talked about great secondary casts a lot, but...I can't help it. The books I've been reading lately really have had some good ones. Colin's stepmother was a lovely woman who wanted her family together and has always viewed Colin as hers, even though he rebuffed her mothering (sort of ... it's complicated).I enjoyed the hours spent reading this and look forward to reading the next in the series when it comes out. 4 stars without a doubt!Book provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
review 2: Vicky Dreiling hits it out of the park once again with the next installment in "The Sinful Scoundrels" series and boy does this book tug on your heart strings. Lady Angeline and Colin, both born a week apart were always pushed together towards an arranged marriage, but we all know when your parents force you to do one thing you always hate it and go the other way which started their rivalry. In the previous book "What a Wicked Earl Wants" we saw some of the rivalry but in this book they were much tamer towards each other. The story starts when Colin, the Earl of Ravenshire is summoned by his father for the Annual House Party to address the sale of his childhood home Sommerall (the house where his mother was buried in). Colin comes home ready to fight his father and present him with a plan to renovate the house and live in it but his father seems to have other plans. His father issues an ultimatum, either Colin reforms his rakish ways, gets married and settles down in 6 weeks or he will go ahead and sell the house. Colin tries to outwit him but nothing gets by his father.Lady Angeline, on the other hand has just come back from a year in Paris following a scandalous breaking off an engagement with Brentamoor, which left her reputation in shambles. Both Angeline and Colin were pushed together subtly in hope for a match by their parents but it took them a while to realize it on their own. One thing I absolutely loved in this book was how Lady Angeline was a 31 year old spinster who wanted to live her independent life but because of the rough restraints in society and the way spinsters were treated she would have to sacrifice her relationship with her family for that independence. It allows many women nowadays to relate to her troubles and how an unmarried woman was incomplete just because she doesn't have a husband. The one thing I hated the most was how I kept on yelling at them to get together and come up with the plan for marriage since the moment they ran into each other. Marriage doesn't always solve everything but imagine if they got married earlier on in the book, the fun that would take place there and drama, ohhhh I would've loved that but they were going on their own schedule.I would give this book 4.5/5 stars only because the H/H stalled too much in getting together and that itself irritated me but otherwise another hit right out of the ballpark! less
