review 1: What an amazing, interesting, and captivating book. Not only did it have a totally interesting take on what happens to the dead, it was also an action-packed murder mystery. Mackenzie was the perfect main character: smart, competent, and curious. It was a completely engrossing novel that kept me reading. I loved this book so much because it was totally new and distinct this YA world were everything feels similar. I can't wait to read the second book!
review 2: Mackenzie Bishop is a sixteen year old who is in the process of moving into the vast Coronado, an old hotel that has been converted into apartments; so her mother can open her dream business - Bishop’s Coffee Shop. Mackenzie is not supportive of the move, as she feels that her parents may be trying to e
... morescape the pain and memories of losing their son in a hit and run accident. It is less than a year since Ben was killed in this horrific accident. At a very young age, Mackenzie’s grandfather, Da, started to train her to take over his role of Keeper. A Keeper is a person who lives in the Outer world but travels to the Narrows through hidden doors. While in the Narrows, it is the Keeper’s responsibility to send Histories back to the Archives to prevent them from escaping to the Outer World. A History is a copy of a person’s life that is kept in the Archives and is guarded by Librarians. Histories are not ghosts but rather records of a person’s entire life. Sometimes Histories with unsettled lives wake, escape to the Narrows and become confused and possibly violent. For the most part, the Histories that wake are children and teens, restless because they have died before they could live full lives. As Mackenzie settles into her new home, she has unsettled feelings and she learns that a murder has taken place in her room. At the same time, her responsibilities as Keeper are increasing. Many more Histories are escaping into the Narrows and her job of returning the Histories is becoming more violent and increasingly dangerous. This is the first book that I read by Victoria Schwab and I would highly recommend it. I really enjoyed her writing style, especially the way she revealed the past conversations of Mackenzie and her grandfather by bolded print sections, and her plot twists. I would recommend this book for young adults, over the age of thirteen, and adults. I look forward to reading the second book in The Archived series, The Unbound. less
