review 1: "what is it you want jack? is this the behavior that will get you what you want?""the AC lapped her in comfort. she felt herself reviving like a plant out of heat.""she'd learned from experience that nobody - not the reporters or radio interviewers or her fellow students or her mother - really wanted to listen to hostage-girl being insecure. they wanted her to be brave. they wanted her to inspire them. and they wanted her to get over it. because anything else demanded too much of them.""you just need a chance to relax, until things get normal." there was no 'normal' anymore. not one she recognized. her old life was gone."happy endings, sometimes they dont look the way you expect them to.""women didnt get all dressed up for men. they got dressed up to be seen by other wo... moremen."
review 2: I won all four of the current Dare Island books in a Dear Author giveaway.Carolina Blues is the fourth of the series and the fourth one I have read. I read the last three in a week. So yes, I think that is called a glom.Carolina Blues is the first that doesn’t deal directly with the Fletcher family. I saw a bit of sequel bait, but it didn’t hit you over the head and I may have been smelling sequel bait when it was just the essence of Dare Island and the fish house. What can I say. I love Virginia Kantra’s writing. The series is evolving, the style of writing is changing. That is keeping it fresh, even with a glom. For me gloms tend to point out weaknesses instead of strengths. But I this Ms. Kantra is shaking it up just enough to keep my interest. This addition to the line seemed a little rawer. The language is decidedly more rough, and the back story of the heroine, Lauren Patterson, is also rougher, but really different. So Jack Rossi is the new police chief on Dare Island. Lauren Patterson is working on a book while visiting Dare Island. Well, she would be if she didn’t have writer’s block. Coincidentally (wink wink) Lauren is the author that Meg Fletcher (from Carolina Girl) is doing PR for. So she has come to stay at the Pirate’s Rest to try to work through some issues.Jack and Lauren strike instant sparks off each other. As with all of the Dare Island books, their relationship starts strong and fast. “She wasn’t his usual type. Before he met her, he didn’t consider himself the kind of guy who was in the market for a casual hookup.“But his dick didn’t care. “The sunlight struck glints in her dark hair like charcoal sparks. She glowed with life and perspiration, warming him in places that had been dead cold a long, long time. She appealed to something dark and animal inside him, a darkness he usually hid, an animal he was doing his damnedest to control.”So it was fast, it was animalistic, and it was a great read. And by animalistic, I mean that Jack saved a kitten, as much as anything. They both talk tough, but inside they are marshmallows for the other. Even though Jack talks about the darkness in his soul, he treats Lauren with care, love, and respect. He treasures her from the start. They are a couple that respects and lusts for each other from day one.“Jack, Lauren thought with a stab of pure longing.“She got Jack. All that tough strength, all that tempered control, all that sublimated passion, to wrap herself in like a down comforter, his hard hands and broad shoulders and smoldering dark eyes.”Lauren is not your typical heroine. She has tats and body piercings. She is a pen pal and phone buddy of a prisoner doing hard time for a major crime. But she is sweet and loving, supporting her family (and another) with her writing. She has a guilt that she carries with her daily, and she works to lessen that guilt by doing what she thinks is the right thing to do.As always, the writing and editing are spot on. Now, my negatives with this are basically the same negatives I had with the other three. This relationship is so very quick to build and lead to a HEA. The book/writing block issue also seemed rather conveniently quick in turnaround time. She has the block, she gets over the block, she writes, it is published, she is on tour, and bam, it all works out. But it is kind of like a carnival ride. It is quick, it is fun, and that just leaves all the more time for the next ride. And I am looking forward to the next Dare Island fun ride. less
