review 1: I listened to this story on librovox.org. My daughter (14 year old) and I were listening to it for a girls book club. I enjoyed the characters, the immigrants from Bohemia and watching their transition into Nebraskas small town culture. There were some very hard parts of this story. Antonia was truly a strong character and it was most interesting to hear the story told by a young man who truly loved Antonia but would never have her.
review 2: I'm a sucker for Willa Cather, and this is only the second novel I've read as a budding enthusiast. She breathes life into an early American landscape of heroines and farmers and love-struck men, and I leave each chapter with an oddly inescapable sense of loss. I envy the freedom of the sunsets and fields she describes
... more in beautiful brief passages as well as the easy familiarity her characters build with one another across ages, genders, and families. She writes of a simpler time that comforts the busy modern reader, allowing him or her the chance to escape into the warmth of a once pristine American arcadia. It's time to read O' Pioneers again. less
