The Guardians of Childhood
review 1: This story tells of how the Guardians of Childhood came to be. Who are the Guardians of Childhood? Think about it and you know the answer... Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, etc. All of these exist to guard and protect our childhood. This science fiction/fantasy books describes how they came to be. It begins when Man in the Moon (MiM) was just a baby. He had a wonderful childhood with excellent parents. He also lived on the Moon Clipper, which sailed though many universes. It was also able to turn into a moon at night. He had many fantastic creatures, but his favorite was Nightlight, who kept all nightmares away. Pitch, the King of Nightmares, heard about the boy who did not have nightmares, and he was determined to find him. Eventually their ships came upon each ot... moreher and a battle ensued. Nightlight took and oath to protect MiM. He did, but MiM never saw him again. When MiM emerged from his spot of safety, Pitch was gone, and MiM was safe, but he was now without his parents or Nightlight. He still had a great childhood. When he got older, he found a book his mom had read to him about planet earth. He went to that planet and started orbiting it. He was still lonely and saw on earth other children just like him. He longed to talk to them, but he couldn't, but he did get some of their balloons that floated away that were filled with their hopes. He wanted to help fulfill these hopes, so he called on some people who could help. A great toy maker, a candy maker, one who tells great stories, and one who puts surprises under pillows, but he still saw something was missing. Children were still having nightmares, and he remembered Nightlight. He decided to be a nightlight for children. This is how the Guardians of Childhood began. This is a wonderful tale to tell the beginnings of how all of these people were started. It is a beautifully illustrated book using mixed media. The graphics are rich, but with the majority of it being a cool palette puts this book into a dreamlike state. I would recommend this book to first to second graders to be read aloud to or to third and fourth graders as a read alone. The text is a little complex, but the younger kids would still understand it if it were being read to them. Many kids would like to read about how these people who are so important to them got started. This was such a beautiful story told with beautiful graphics to go with it.
review 2: A beautifully illustrated book that captured my heart when I first saw it a year ago. It has since captured the hearts of both my daughters. My three and a half year old is enamored with the the story and its characters. My seven and a half year old understands the drama a bit more and thinks it is amazing. Her words, "I hope this book lasts a very, very long time because it is amazing!" This will quickly become a well worn, well loved book on our family shelves. less
