review 1: This was a book I kept taking out for my daughter and she kept rejecting. It's a fractured fairy tale. I found it enchanting. I think some of the concept may be a little too subtle for her to pick up on her own, but would make a FABULOUS read aloud. The way the writing flows, I just think it would be a wild ride for a child to hear. Definitely know some families to recommend this one to. Oh and I shouldn't forget to add - the illustrations peppered throughout army favorite - pencil drawings are so detailed and captivating you could stare at them for hours!
review 2: I really enjoyed this book, and I strongly believe that any fantasy enthusiast would cherish William Joyce's writing style. As soon as I began reading the book, I couldn't set it down. Joyce
... more has a way of writing that gets his readers to think outside of the box. Yet, he is able to keep his characters simplistic and heartwarming. Who wouldn't like a story that explained how Santa Claus came to be? I do not believe this book would be successful for struggling readers. Joyce's vocabulary is too complex, and there was a plethora of words that I had to look up myself. However, with the proper amount of scaffolding, I believe this book would make an incredible read aloud. As a teacher, I would use this book for:- Read Aloud- Character Mapping less
