review 1: I gave up 160 pages in, of a total of 319. So just about half way there. The blurbs say that the main character is reminscent of Arkady Renko (the Moscow special investigator most famously of Gorky Park) but I don't see it. Renko was much more deeply drawn, and Martin Cruz Smith's books had a lot more color and the plots very skillful. Ryan is not in the same league at all. This book just didn't do it for me, it felt like a boudoir murder mystery, more appropriate for a play.

... moreete due to the involvement of political powers, and deal with the political climate of a fledgling country following a revolution, made a complex read that keeps you guessing about the actual killer. I hope to get to read the first book in the future and I will watch for additional books by Mr. Ryan. less
