Captain Alexei Dimitrevich Korolev
review 1: Overall. a lack lustre read. By the end of the novel, I actually didn't care who had done it. I had absolutely no connection tthe victim, so much so, that I can't remember her name. Ryan's first book, I really enjoyed- Moscow was so intrinsic to the story that it was another chracter. Unfortunately this does not carry over into the Ukraine and I just kept wishing that the tale would end so i could start a new book. Why three stars then i hear you ask? Well I really like Korolev and were he not the main chracter I probably would've used this book for kindling. We did have a cold winter... However there just is something about him, an endearing sort of whimsy hidden by a backbone of steel- the secret CHristian, the arm of Stalin, the loyal, but not so loyal Communist. I lik... moree his mind. Were this book about Korolev and not the events around him, i would have given this book five.
review 2: I read this a while back as I am a fan of Martin Cruz Smith and it was recommended to me. This is a well written book and in the vein of gorky park but in an earlier era. The action is set in soviet occupied Ukraine in the 1930s. Although I enjoyed it I found it slightly uncomfortable in view of the fact it is set at the time of the Holodomor and the author alludes only briefly to it. But I must read his Holy Thief less
