review 1: It takes this book a while to pick up speed, but once it does, it is a fully satisfying ghost story. My biggest problem with it was that I didn't take it seriously as a ghost story until the very end, which lessened the scare factor. Also, the intersection of the dual threads is not immediately apparent--you have to be patient and wait for it. However, the wait is worth it and the ending is a shocker. The author is mainly known for her mystery series featuring Thora Gudmundsdottir. I've read two of them and liked them very much. But it was refreshing to read a stand-alone novel, especially one that is such a departure. It is a mystery, but quite different from the usual mystery story. For one thing there seem to be several mysteries that need solved and I thought it was v... moreery clever how the author tied them all together at the end.
review 2: “This ghost story kept me up at night, unable to put the book down. Each chapter alternates between two storylines that eventually converge on a bleak landscape of fear, horror and death. When the mystery is finally solved and the reader expects the ends to be tied up, one finds that there isn’t any resolution but the sad cycle of madness to continue.” —Stephanie at KDL’s Cascade Township Branch less
