review 1: First off, it has to be difficult to write a book which is part ghost story, part mystery, with a bit of horror thrown in - and keep it true to all genres. But this book does exactly that. That it's a 'ghost story' there is no doubt, but there is also a very strong, very complex mystery at the heart of it, and it follows all the 'rules' of mystery-writing. (In fact, you could take away the ghost elements and still have an excellent mystery novel here.) But it's the clever interplay of these three elements - ghost, horror, mystery - that gives this book its zing. It's smack! (Like at the side of your head, when you say: OMG Shoulda seen THAT coming.) But you can't and you won't - see it coming. It's a perfect book, imo. It's written well and the characters are succinct entit... moreies, hardly a stereotype among them. Plus set in Iceland? What's not to like about that? When I first started reading this book, the first chapter or so, all I could think was why is this group of characters (there are two sets of MCs, in alternating chapters) so inept? They go off to restore an old building in a virtually inaccessible location in the middle of the winter and don't even bring extra batteries or a first aid kit. BUT, the writer writes them so well you tend to forget how inept they are and just accept, well some people are like that, and they are. Not everyone is a survivalist; not everyone brings every conceivable supply one might need. And okay, who'd forget a first aid kit? They do. It's in their nature as urbanites who are accustomed to having their every need fulfilled almost immediately, what with stores everywhere and the internet and its many resources always at hand. So it makes sense that there are these three adults out in nowhere, thinking they can tough it out when the reader knows (omg we know) that they simply can NOT.The alternating chapters feature an MC who is a psychiatrist dealing with his own issues, which are complex indeed. He's trying to help a police detective with a particularly difficult murder investigation. It seems a separate story until the two (stories) slowly unite in a final AHAH set of circumstances.Anyhow, I loved this book so much I've already got another one lined up to read (by Sigurdardottir.) I am not reading the Icelandic version, btw, which I wish I could. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

It's okay, but I like dialogue to tell the story, there was way too much narration here.
