review 1: I like mysteries and crime thrillers as “relaxing reads” especially after nonfiction books or more serious books. I especially liked the backdrop of the “Troubles,” the term for the historically dysfunctional relationship between Loyalists (pro-British) and Republicans (pro-Irish) within Northern Ireland. The crime story itself got a little too “guy”ish/sex/”adventure chase-y/bombs and guns going off everywhere” for my tastes towards the end, but it still was a quick and refreshing read. I will look for #2 in the series and insert it in to my reading some time after some heavier stuff as a "refresher."
review 2: I'm not usually a fan of crime or mystery genres, usually too gruesome for me. What I enjoyed about this book was the totally foreig
... moren, to me, backdrop of Ireland. Really interesting stories of the Troubles interwoven with the murders, connected with the politics. Some awful bits, but that wasn't the focus, as is often the case.McKinty's writing is intelligent, although there are a number of acronyms not defined in the glossary. But, he nicely goes back and forth between the crimes and the main character, Sean's, life as a cop and Catholic, I've already reserved the next books at the library. less

Nice detective novel. Kept me turning pages, finishing it off fairly quickly, and wanting more.
