review 1: I chose this audiobook based on the narrator, and he really does bring these Irish characters to life with his accent. The mystery (a pair of related murders and one seemingly unrelated) is compelling, but even more interesting to me was the backdrop of "The Troubles", and the insight I gained into that conflict. This is the first in a series, and I look forward to following Detective Sean Duffy through additional mysteries.
review 2: I always enjoy a book that takes a slightly unstandard approach to the narrative. It makes it more interesting to read than the formulaic approach that most authors follow (or perhaps that we expect them to follow). This is set in Northern Ireland during the "Troubles" and the backstory and plot can be difficult to read, at times,
... more as there is more casual violence than usual. But that was the reality in those times. That is actually what the people who lived there had to live with. It isn't gratuitious or over-embellished. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the Sean Duffy character. He's a police detective, but also a human being. He has his own personal struggles, as do his neighbours, and as a Catholic police officer in Northern Ireland, he has a extra layer of complexity to his life that often colours how he reacts and interacts throughout the novel. I had never heard of Adrian Mckinty before I picked this novel to read, but I'm most definitely going to get his other novels! less
