review 1: The second Sean Duffy book packs just as much punch as the first, if not more. In the same troubled setting of 1980s Northern Ireland, Duffy finds himself investigating the grisly and mysterious murder of an American. As usual, things are not straight-forward and the case takes many strange and dangerous turns. Soon, other murders come to light and things become more complicated than anyone could have imagined. Duffy is a relentless, smart, tough and hard-working detective who has a dark sense of humour and a unwavering need to uncover the truth. He's an incredibly compelling character who I always want to read more of. McKinty is a talented author who has a flair for for clever and darkly funny dialogue, an ability to create an authentic setting and a knack for producing ... moregripping, realistic and powerful plot-lines. If you enjoy crime fiction, then the Sean Duffy books are a must read. If you want to try reading crime fiction, then these books are a great place to start as they are a great example of brilliant crime writing.
review 2: This second entry in the Troubles Trilogy offers up a rich plot with a generous helping of McKinty's characteristic lyrical language. Less explosive than the previous novel, The Cold Cold Ground, this plot still has its twists and turns, and concludes with a surprise final shoot out which is, unfortunately, not a cliffhanger. The background of the troubled war years of the early 1980s is more than merely a plot device, it is the tapestry of McKinty's own past, perhaps his attempt to take a more active role in events that swirled around him as a boy. Or perhaps his attempt to make sense of what he saw. In any case, this portrayal can enlighten the reader about a time and a place so specific and so married to one another and to those who peopled it as to be epic in scale and ordinary as human nature. less
