review 1: Si le tuviéramos que exigir al libro una conexión con el panorama de la dictadura, quizás no lo lograría del todo bien. Pero quizás tampoco hay que exigírselo. Como todo Zambra, el libro es mucho más íntimo y el contexto no entra del todo en la historia de los personajes, funcionando como un telón de fondo que a veces despierta ciertas reflexiones más sobre la historia personal que sobre el país.

Ways of Going Home alternates between our protagonists 9 year old self in 1980's Chile under Pinoche, and his adult self: a writer retelling his life story, separated from his wife, an affair with his childhood sweetheart, trying to write his way through the past and present. ... more A reoccurring theme kind of haunts me in this tale: we are all secondary characters in someone else's story. Zambra's skill with words envelopes his reader. I felt as if I was reading his personal biography, having to remind myself again and again it was fiction. less
